Pinus pinea - Stone Pine
Pinus pinea is a large evergreen tree growing to a maximum height of approximately 25 metres. It has a broad, conical crown when young but as it matures, the crown becomes rounded with a flattened top. The bark is orange brown with deep groves and the foliage is formed of long, dark green pairs of needles.
Shiny brown cones hang from the branches, falling when the edible fruits inside are ripe.
Stone pine is best grown on fertile, well-drained soil but is tolerant to drought and coastal exposures.
