Pyrus calleryana Chanticleer - Callery Pear
Pyrus Chanticleer is an attractive, low maintenance tree making it a favourite with architects, landscapers and gardeners alike.
A medium sized tree with a conical crown and a tolerance of pollution it is the ideal candidate for urban, avenue or garden settings.
Early in Spring it covers itself in an abundance of creamy white flowers and is one of the first trees to come into leaf. Throughout summer, the foliage is attractive, dark green and glossy before turning bright shades of yellow, orange and crimson in the Autumn. It is also one of the last trees to lose its leaves and therefore one of the best deciduous trees to be used for screening.
Pyrus Chanticleer was bred by Edward Scanlon in the 1950s, its parent plants being brought from China in the early 20th century.
FACT: Named in honour of Joseph Callery, a French missionary, who discovered and collected this plant in China in 1858.

Bark: Reddish brown and smooth when young, becoming grey with shallow fissures.
