Malus toringo Sargentii - Sargent Crabapple
Malus toringo is a small Japanese crab tree with semi weeping branches that add to it’s unusual attraction. It was first introduced to the UK in 1856.
This pretty Japanese Crap Apple has glossy dark green leaves that are oval and mildly lobed. During the spring the tree is covered in masses of fragrant, bright white flowers that appear from pink buds.
The Malus toringo also offers interest through the autumnal months, the glossy dark green leaves turn lemony yellow contrasting the bright yellow / orange fruits.
A perfect small multistem tree for the garden, looks great when pruned to an umbrella form.
FACT: It is from the thread-like stalks of the flowers and fruits that this maple gets its name. Capillipes is derived from Cappilaceous or capillaris - resembling a strand of hair. The flowers on the tree are brilliant for the bees and butterflies.
