Betula papyrifera - Paper Birch
Known as the paper birch, Betula papyrifera is native to North America. Its most distinctive feature is the peeling bark which is red on juvenile trees and whitens with age. This is a large tree which can grow to more than 20 metres. Leaves are dark green turning yellow in autumn with spring catkins, giving year-round interest. Does best on moist but well drained, sandy soil.
