Phillyrea angustifolia - Green Olive
Phillyrea angustifolia is a bushy, dense, compact evergreen shrub, that has been awarded RHS Garden Merit, originating from the Mediterranean region. It can also be known as the Green Olive or False Olive tree as its part of the Olive family.
Compared to the Olives’ silvery grey coloured leaves, the Phillyrea angustifolia has narrow, dark green, leathery leaves. In late spring, early summer the slightly fragrant creamy white flowers appear in small tight clusters in the leaf axils, followed by globose blue/black fruits.
Phillyrea angustifolia is a brilliant tree as a substitute to Olea europaea if you still wish to create that Mediterranean look in the garden.
FACT: Phillyrea angustifolia can tolerate high levels of salinity in the soil ,making it suitable for maritime locations.
