Crataegus prunifolia
(Broad-leaved Cockspur Thorn)
Crataegus prunifolia is a small, compact tree ideal as a feature. It is the thorniest of the hawthorns with long sharp thorns along the branches.
Small white flowers appear in late spring. In summer it has glossy, oval, green leaves later changing to brilliant orange-red. The colour of the autumn foliage coincides with the plump red berries which provide a feast for wild birds.
Crataegus prunifolia is a good choice for coastal and urban planting and is tolerant of pollution. It grows well in most soil conditions including dry and wet.
