Tilia europaea Pallida - Common Lime
A best seller at Deepdale Trees, Tilia ’Pallida’ is a fast growing, deciduous tree which establishes quickly. Tilia europaea is a hybrid which occurs naturally from parent plants Tilia cordata (small leaved lime) and Tilia platyphyllos (large leaved lime).
Popular for its uniform pyramidal habit, it thrives in a wide range of conditions and tolerates urban environments.
The summer flowers are sweetly scented and borne in clusters. The fruit which follows is a nut like drupe, about the same size as a garden pea. The lush green foliage has a greenish yellow underside, slightly hairy and with tufts of brown hair in the leaf axils. In autumn, the foliage turns a rich, buttery yellow.
Consideration of the planting location needs to be made as this species attracts aphids which secrete honeydew.
It's tolerance of pruning makes it a very adaptable for pollarding or training if needed, often used for pleached or box head trees.
FACT: Unter den Linden, translating to "under the linden trees" is an avenue running from the Brandenburg Gate to the site of the Stadtschloss royal palace in Berlin, flanked by Tilia europaea 'Pallida'.
