Prunus spinosa - Blackthorn
Native to Europe, Prunus spinosa is a deciduous tree with thorny branches and a rounded, open crown. Blossom first appears in early spring with small white, star shaped flowers. This is then followed by ovate dark green leaves with a toothed edge. In autumn, black berry like fruits cover the tree and are known for their rich flavour, used to make sloe gin.
Best grown in full sun on almost all soils. If left unchecked, it can produce sucker so best to remove these.
