Ilex castaneifolia - Holly Chestnut Leaf

Better known as Chestnut Leaf Holly, Ilex castaneifolia is a vigorous, evergreen tree growing to a maximum height of approximately 12 metres. It has a dense, pyramidal crown with smooth bark and bright green twigs. Glossy dark green leaves have a spiked margin and are slightly sharp. Clusters of tiny white flowers bloom in spring and are followed by large red berries in autumn. Due to its evergreen foliage, it is great as a screening tree. It also has a fantastic resistance to hot, dry conditions and will grow well on almost all well drained soils. It can withstand pruning so shaping into clipped hedges or topiary shapes is possible.
