Heptacodium miconioides - Seven-sons Tree

Heptacodium miconioides is a medium sized, decidiuous shrub. Native to China, it was reintroduced into the horticulture world before extinction in 1980.

The deciduous tree offers multiple interesting features, the bark is a creamy beige with long thin sections of bark that peels—encourages people to touch it. The leaves are large and ovate, curling downwards occasionally creating a love heart shape.

Heptacodium miconiodes flowers in late summer and into autumn. When the flowers fall with the first frost but their calyxes remain, turning pink before darkening to burgundy. Therefore, offering continued interest throughout the year.

FACT: Hepta means seven and refers to the number of scented white flowers that grow on each fork of the panicles at the ends of the branches.
