Alnus spaethii - Spaeths Alder

Alnus Spaethii is a hybrid of the Japanese Alder and Caucasian Alder; named after the famous German botanist Franz Spaeth. It is an extremely vigorous, fast-growing tree with a rounded crown. Large, long, serrated leaves emerge purple, turning green as they develop. Lovely yellow catkins in spring and purple red autumn colour give seasonal interest. Grows best in moist, free draining soil although will tolerate both wet and dry conditions.
