Acer ginnala - Amur Maple
Acer ginnala originates from Northern China and Japan, it’s common name Amur Maple derives from the name of the river that divides China and Russia.
Acer ginnala is a small, slow growing tree that grows to 7-10m in maturity. It flourishes in full sun or light shade, can withstand most soil types and has the added advantages of being wind and drought resistant.
The large shrub offers interest throughout the seasons, being early into leaf with large three lobed glossy green leaves and producing yellow-white fragrant flowers in May, to turning to a bright red / orange in Autumn.
FACT: Acer ginnala extracts have astringent properties and are used in cancer research.
FACT: The young leaves of the Acer have been used a tea substitute—they contain about 30% tannin.
